These are the vines Margaret and Hal planted by hand in the spring of 1987, on the slope everyone told them was too steep. They have never been watered; their roots go down through the stony loam into the rock.

The fruit is small, dark and intense. We pick it late, at the end of September, when it tastes ripe rather than when the numbers say so, usually around 24.5 °Brix. It ferments in open oak vats, punched down by hand three times a day, then rests twenty-two months in French oak in the cellar under the hill.

Blackberry and violet first, then black pepper and something savoury, like a hillside after rain. It’s the wine we’re known for, and the one we’d keep if we could only make one.

Questions

Is this the wine in the photos at the top of the home page?

Yes: those are the old syrah vines, through one year. The 2025 from that row is in barrel now and will be released in 2027.

How long will it keep?

Easily fifteen years in a cool cellar. It is drinking well now after an hour in a decanter.
